Tampa, Fla. -- Leave it to the possibility of an illness to bring out the humor in George Steinbrenner. Released Sunday night from a Sarasota, Fla., hospital, where he was being treated after what was called a fainting spell, Steinbrenner joked Monday about an incident that was front-page news in New York over the weekend.
"I didn't faint," Steinbrenner said in a statement released by his publicist, Howard Rubenstein. "I was just practicing my slide into second base."
Steinbrenner, 73, collapsed Saturday during a memorial for Hall of Fame quarterback Otto Graham. Eyewitnesses said Steinbrenner fell to the floor face first and was unconscious for a few seconds before he was wheeled out of the church.
