bunt pop out in foul territory bei 2 strikes

In a game between the Cubs and Phillies last July 23, the Cubs batter had two strikes on him with men on first and second, and less than two out.
The batter popped up a bunt foul behind catcher Mike Lieberthal who choose to catch the foul ball on the fly.
The batter is automatically out for a bunt foul on a third strike.

Fly balls caught in foul territory are treated as live balls. IF a foul ball is caught, a baserunner CAN tag up and try to advance a base (s). The fielder can also attempt to throw that runner out. For this reason, you will see players purposely not catch certain foul balls, for the fear that a baserunner can tag without a good throw. A common example is this one: 1 out, runner on third, tie game, bottom of the ninth. A foul ball is hit deep to left, and is catchable by the left fielder. If he does catch it, the runner tags and the game is over. IF he lets it drop, its a foul ball and the at-bat goes on. So there is an example where its a smart move to allow a foul ball to drop.
Now, if a ball is dropped in foul territory, it is a dead ball, the same as if he never touched it in the first place. Only catching a foul ball makes it a live play

Ein Blick in Abschnitt "5 - Putting the Ball in Play":
Abschnitt "6 - The Batter" sagt uns:
A FOUL BALL is a batted ball that settles on foul territory between home and first base, or between home and third base, or that bounds past first or third base on or over foul territory, or that first falls on foul territory beyond first or third base, or that, while on or over foul territory, touches the person of an umpire or player, or any object foreign to the natural ground.
A foul fly shall be judged according to the relative position of the ball and the foul line, including the foul pole, and not as to whether the infielder is on foul or fair territory at the time he touches the ball.
Ein Blick in Abschnitt "5 - Putting the Ball in Play":
The ball becomes dead and runners advance one base, or return to their bases, without liability to be put out, when --
...
(e) A foul ball is not caught; runners return. The umpire shall not put the ball in play until all runners have retouched their bases;
- Foul-Ball
- kein Catch
Abschnitt "6 - The Batter" sagt uns:
A batter is out when --
(a) His fair or foul fly ball (other than a foul tip) is legally caught by a fielder;
...
(d) He bunts foul on third strike;
A strikeout is a statistic credited to a pitcher and charged to a batter when the umpire calls three strikes on a batter, as set forth in this Rule 10.15.
(a) The official scorer shall score a strikeout whenever a batter:
...
(4) bunts foul on third strike, unless such bunt on third strike results in a foul fly caught by any fielder, in which case the official scorer shall not score a strikeout and shall credit the fielder who catches such foul fly with a putout.

A FOUL BALL is a batted ball
- that settles on foul territory between home and first base, or between home and third base,
- or that bounds past first or third base on or over foul territory,
- or that first falls on foul territory beyond first or third base,
- or that, while on or over foul territory, touches the person of an umpire or player, or any object foreign to the natural ground.
